SciBowl Rules

Rounds:
There will be two teams competing at once in each round.  The reader reads the question, then the kids buzz in. The buzzer person recognizes the first buzzer by reading off their letter/number (A1, A2, etc.). The reader indicates whether the answer was correct. The students have 10 seconds to buzz in, and then 5 seconds to answer. If the first buzz gets it incorrect, the buzzer volunteer will recognize the first person from the opposing team who has already buzzed in. The proctor may ask the team to buzz in if no one from that team has.

Point Deductions:

If a student

  • Interrupts the moderator BEFORE they finish the question with a request to repeat

    • If the whole question has not been read, the reader may read it again

    • Point deduction

  • Asks the moderator AFTER they finish the question with a request to repeat

    • After completing the question, no repeats are allowed

    • No point deduction

  • Blurts out an answer before being recognized

    • Point deduction

    • If the question has not been completely read, the question will be reread in its entirety, and the opposing team will have an opportunity to answer. The team with the blurt is ineligible to answer.

  • Buzz in early

    • Point deduction

    • Finish reading the question, buzzer volunteer will say “that’s a point deduction for team # for an early buzz.” Recognize the first person from the opposing team to answer

  • Gives an incorrect answer

    • If the first team’s answer to a question is wrong and the question was completely read, the other team is given the opportunity to answer it.

    • There is no question stealing for true/false questions.

    • Not a point deduction

  • Says a contradictory letter and scientific answer

    • The team gets the question wrong. Give the other team a chance to answer and buzz in.

    • Any prefacing or intermediate remarks that do not directly answer the question, such as “my answer is” or repeating the question, will be considered delaying the game and counted as an incorrect answer.

    • Not a point deduction, but counted as incorrect

  • If both teams get the question wrong

    • Read the correct answer, and move to the next question

    • No point deduction

  • Team Talking

    • There will be NO team talking during the round. The individual who buzzes in must be the one to answer.

    • Team talking includes hand signaling or mouthing of any sort.

    • This counts as a point deduction.
